Week 1 "What is Christianity?"

Question: What does the word 'Christian' mean?

It basically is a term used to describe one who is in relationship with Jesus Christ.

Question: What is involved in having a relationship with Jesus Christ?

 1. Believe in Him.  (John 3:15)
 2. Follow Him   (John 8:12)
 3. Receive Him (John 1:12)
 4. Worship Him  (Matt. 28:17)
 5. Love and Obey Him  (John 14:15)
 6. Give yourself to Him  (Luke 9:23)

Question: What happens to one who becomes a Christian?

1. Personal Experience:
-People do not become a Christian by being born into a Christian family, by going to church, giving money to church, even
being baptized and serving in the church.
-You are not a Christian because you are not Jewish or a Buddhist or any other world religion.
-A person becomes a Christian when they believe, personally that Jesus is Lord and Savior. (Acts 16:31)

2. New Birth:
-To be  'born again' is not a bad label. It is necessary for one to become a Christian.
          -John 3:3;  Titus 3:5

3. New Life:
-We are saved. We are delivered and set free from the penalty and guilt of sin and death.
          -Rom. 1:16;  Lk. 19:10; Eph. 2:8-9

-We are justified. We have legally been declared righteous by God. Our sin and it's guilt pardoned. God placed the sin and
our guilt on Jesus when He was on the Cross of  Calvary.
            -Rom. 5:1,3;  2 Cor. 5:21

-We are sanctified. We are set apart, cleansed, made holy and dedicated to God. We are set apart from sin and set apart
to God for His glory. We are saints, which comes from the   word sanctify.
            -1 Cor. 1:2,30;  Heb. 13:12

-We are reconciled. We are now at peace with  God, we are no longer enemies of God but His friends. As a result we may
approach God with freedom and confidence.
              -Rom. 5:1; Eph. 2:13-18; 3:12;  Col. 1:21-22

-We are redeemed. Christ purchased us by his own life and set us free to serve Him forever.
            -Rev. 1:5-6; 5:9-10;  1 Peter 1:18-20

-We are forgiven. To forgive means to pardon or cancel a debt. God has removed our sin  as far as the East is from the
West and he remembers our sin no more.  Forgiveness comes   when we confess and repent of our sins before God.
Confess means to agree with God that you have sinned and to repent means to turn from your choice to sin to choose to
      live  for God.
            -Ps. 103:12;  1 Jn 1:7-9; 1 Jn 3:4;  Acts 2:38-39

-We have eternal life. This is the promise of God to all those who by faith trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. It begins the
moment you ask Christ into your life.
          -Jn 3:16; 1 Jn 2:25; Jn 10:10; 14:1-4

-We are no longer who we once were. The life you once lived, is over. The sins you once  committed are forgiven, you past
has been wiped clean and you are a new creature in Christ. The past is forgotten and the future is filled with love and
       grace.
            -2 Cor. 5:17

Question: Can salvation, redemption, forgiveness, sanctification, justification and eternal life be earned by being good while
                 here on earth?
How are those things given to us?

     Eph. 2:8-9
-As a free gift from God. through His grace by faith in Jesus Christ His Son.
