II.  JEHOVAH   ( Gen. 2:7 )
      A. Biblical Usage
          1. The second name of God revealed in the Bible is "Yahweh'. This is translated  "LORD"  Wherever  we find the words
              LORD or GOD printed in capitals the original Hebrew word is   "Yahweh'

QUESTION: What is another word for the name Yahweh?

          Yahweh is a more correct form of the Hebrew name. Jehovah is actually a misspelling by Christians in the 12th. We didn't use the name Jehovah till then. Therefore yahweh and Jehovah can be used interchangeably.

QUESTION: Tell me what you know about the name Jehovah

          2. Yahweh/ JEHOVAH  is formed from the two tenses of the Hebrew word "Havah" which  means  'to be'.
              -A possible   explanation of the word is:       Yehi - he will be     Hovi - being (He is)   Hah yah - he was

          3. JEHOVAH translated GOD or  LORD is found 6823 times in the Bible.
             ( YHWH ) the vowels were added from the name ADONAI so the  name could  be pronounced.

          4. Let me add that when JEHOVAH is first revealed in the 2nd and 3rd chapters of Genesis, His first  name, "Elohim" is
              always added. Except where the woman or the serpent speak. They  speak only   'Elohim'.

          5. In summary, the basic meaning of the word JEHOVAH is the self-existing one. One who is what He is; the expression
             of God's being. It is a title of reverential awe,  expressing absolute and abiding existence.It was a name so filled with
             respect that it  was not spoken a loud by the children of  Israel. ( Ex. 3:14 )

                       Can it be seen in the lives of believers today?

     B. Historical Significance
          1. JEHOVAH first appears in the second chapter of Genesis. It appears only after man  was  formed of the dust of the
              ground and God breathed into his nostrils the breath  of  life and man  became a living  soul. (Gen. 2:7)

         2. After having become a living soul , man is put under the law. Instead of God blessing him as in the first chapter
             (Gen. 1:28) we have  'JEHOVAH God commanded the man'  (Gen. 2:16,17) With this command came the warning
             that with disobedience would   come judgment. (Gen. 3:17-19)

        3. It is the name known to all the patriarchs.

     C. Theological Significance
         1. Jehovah contains the substance of the well known words to Moses " I AM that I  AM"  (Ex. 3:14). The words   'I AM
             that I AM'  are the expression of what God is. It is the expression of God's being, which is  TRUTH and LOVE as
            well as   JUST and HOLY. JEHOVAH show us One who being love, is righteous also, and must judge evil, wherever
            it  is at any cost.

          2. JEHOVAH reveals truth in His being. And also expresses perfect love. In this love God  is the God of  truth and in
              the truest love there is righteousness.  Therefore, one of the outcomes of a  God who is  perfect will be to make the
              man of God  perfect.

          3. JEHOVAH being who He is  loves righteousness and hates iniquity.

QUESTION: What does this say about Jehovah's character

          4. There are three  Moral characteristics associated with  the name JEHOVAH. These deal primarily with the
              relationship  between God and His people.

               -Jehovah is Holy: ( Lev. 11:44-45;   19:1-2;   20:26 )( Ps. 111:9 ) ( Ps. 13:5 )
               -Jehovah is Love: ( 1 John 4:8,16 ) ( 1 John 15:13 ) ( John 3:16 )
               -Jehovah is Good: ( Mark 10:18 ) ( Ex. 34:6,7kjv ) ( Deut 30:5kjv )

          5. There are 3  Comparative Attributes associated with the name Jehovah. These deal with God and His relationship to
              creation. ( Ps. 139 )

               -Jehovah is Omniscient: God has perfect knowledge of all things at all times. ( Ps. 139:1-6 ) ( Ps. 147:5 )
               -Jehovah is Omnipresent: God is everywhere present at the same time. We can  never find ourselves beyond the
                 presence of God. ( Ps. 139:7-11 ) ( Gen. 16:13 ) NKJV
               -Jehovah is omnipotent: God can do everything He wants to do. But God cannot do anything that is against His
                nature. God cannot deny himself or be tempted to sin. ( Ps. 139:12-16 )( Matt. 19:26 ) ( 2 Tim. 2:13 ) ( Jas. 1:13 )

          6. JEHOVAH require righteousness, and is Himself  afflicted by the  ravages brought upon by sin but still more the name
             of  JEHOVAH is not  fully  expressed until He make His creatures  righteous with His own righteousness.

             This  is  seen in the 'new covenant' that JEHOVAH will make with His people.

          7. Jehovah is the covenant making name of God. This covenant is speaking of Christ and His death and resurrection on
              the cross. It is speaking of the 'covenant of grace'. With this JEHOVAH has  provided the way for His people to be
              righteous.

          8. The work of redemption in the OT  is almost always associated with  JEHOVAH ( Gen. 3:8,21 )( Ex. 3:1-10 )
              ( Isa. 53:5-6,10 )(Symbolic of sin covering - 1st animal sacrifice)

         9. The covenants made between God and man are made in the name of  JEHOVAH. (Gen. 8:21-22: Noah)
             ( Ex. 19:1-3:Moses ) ( Ex. 20:1:Moses )(2 Sam. 7:8-16:David) ( Jer. 31:3:New Covenant )

     D. Personal Application

QUESTION: What personal application can we draw from the name Jehovah?

          Yahweh/Jehovah is God's personal name and is a proper noun. It presents God as a person and brings him into relationship with man. When you need assurance that God is there, keeping His promises, even when you waver in your     faith, run to Jehovah. Trust in His name! He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is true love and righteous. because He loves us so, he will make us righteous. it is His work in us. And He is faithful to keep His word.
