This name is one of a number of names compounded with Jehovah. Naturally  these names owe something of their significance to the name Jehovah, which we have  already gone over. Most of the compound names of God arise out of  some historical   event and portrays Jehovah     in some aspect of His character as  meeting human needs. Jehovah-Jireh is one of the few names that is given by man  rather than being revealed by God.

    B. Historical Significance (Genesis 22).
        1. It is the story of the last and greatest  crisis  in the life of Abraham.

QUESTION:  What was this crises?

          Elohim appears to Abraham with the command to offer  up a sacrifice, a burnt offering of his     only and much loved son, Isaac. Abraham is not  aware that this is a testing of his faith. This incident reveals Abraham's obedience and  faith, Isaac's willing submission and Jehovah's gracious provision of a substitute.

         2. Going back to Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac ( Gen 22:7 ) where  Isaac asked 'where is the lamb for the  burnt offering.'
             Abraham answers that God will provide  (Jehoval-Jireh) for Himself a lamb.

         3. It is only  in the last moment when Abraham has his hand  raised with the dagger ready to come down on his son,
             Isaac, that the voice of the  angel of the Lord stops him.

QUESTION: Who is believed to be the Angel of the Lord?
                       What is the significance of The Angel of the Lord coming to Abraham here and not just an angel of the Lord?

         4. Abraham looks about and sees a ram  caught  in the  brush. He offers this up instead of his son.  He calls this place
             Jehovah-Jireh. ( Gen. 22:14 )

    C. Theological Significance
        1. Jireh is a transliteration . It is derived from a form of the verb "to see".

QUESTION: What connection is there between "to see" and " to provide" since both English words are used to translate the
                       one Hebrew word ?

          As Elohim, He is sovereign, all knowing, all wise and all powerful. Because he ordains / predestines our lives, He knows what will happen before it happens, He therefore foresees everything. Another word for seeing is vision or in the Latin "video" to see. Thus with God foreseeing is     "prevision".  Thus having "prevision" or foreknowledge, he sees mans sin and makes provision to meet that  need. Provision, after all, is a compound of two Latin words meaning " to see beforehand"

          A dictionary says that 'provide' is the verb and 'prevision' the noun of ' seeing beforehand'. To God, prevision is followed by provision. Therefore it is proper to translate Jehovah-Jireh as "God will provide" An amplified translation might read 'God who sees beforehand will provide'

QUESTION:  Why is this name significant?

         2. It is the commemoration of a great deliverance.  It is a constant reminder of the wonderful grace of   Jehovah who had
             brought upon this deliverance.

         3. " God will provide" tells of something we can expect, something yet to come.

QUESTION: What is a 'type' in Scripture?

         4. Isaac was a 'type' of man under judgment for sin.
            Animals cannot take away the sins of man. ( Isa. 40:16 ) Only one of like nature.

QUESTION: Since we are created in the image of God, who then is the ultimate 'provision' for man's sin?
                      Who provided Him?

          Jesus was to be the ultimate "provision" for mans sin. And He would be provided by God. God sent Himself. 'God will provide  for Himself a lamb'  The English adds the word 'for'. It is not in the original  Hebrew and can be translated correctly  w/o it.

QUESTION: How would it then be translated if we take out the  word 'for'?

         5. Isaac asked   "where is the lamb?"

ACTION: Read  Gen. 22:14

          2 Chron. 3:1 tells  where Solomon built the house of the Lord. It  was on the mount of the Lord, Mount Moriah. The same mountain where Abraham offered Isaac. This mountain was the very center of Israel's religion, where it's substitutional sacrifices took place. John the Baptist in John 1:29  says  "Behold, the lamb of  God, which takes away the sin of the world." This is also the mountain where it is believed Calvary stood

    D. Personal Application

QUESTION:  What can this name mean for us today?

         1. ( Ps. 23:1 ) says...I shall not want. Life's basic needs are provided by Jehovah-jireh.
             -Give us this day our daily bread ( Matt. 6:11 ). In this He includes all our daily needs.  Food, water, clothing, a roof
               over our heard, strength for the journey and anything else to keep this body and soul together. These are all provided
               by Jehovah-Jireh.

         2. Jehovah-Jireh provided our means of salvation and restitution with Him through the lamb that was slain...Jesus Christ.
             God did Himself provide a lamb. He Himself took our place on the cross, a sacrifice for all mankind, for the sin of the
             world, to those who have faith and believe.

         3. We can ask Jehovah-jire to provide our daily needs and can expect Him to do  just that.
