Jehovah-M'Kaddesh

X. JEHOVAH-M'KADDESH   LORD who sanctifies ( Lev. 20:8 )
    A. Biblical Usage
         1. Jehovah:    Lord             M'Kaddesh:   who sanctifies

QUESTION: What is sanctification?

         2. The Hebrew word is also translated as Dedicate,  consecrate, hallow, and holy, and especially by the word Holy, as
in the Holy One.  It  is obscured as a compound name of God. Yet is essential to the understanding of His nature as
well as Salvation History. Is there a more  important name  for God  that truly expresses His character and His
requirements for His people?    Jehovah-M'Kaddesh, The LORD who sanctifies.

         3. Primary meaning is to 'set apart' or to 'separate'.

QUESTION: What are some examples of that which is set apart unto the Lord?

         4. As 'setting apart' the word is applied to times and seasons. God sanctified the Sabbath  (Gen. 2:3) (Ex. 20:8, 1 ) that
is, He set it apart from the other days.

         5. Sanctify was also used in reference to places such as: the camp of Israel, the city of Jerusalem, the altar, the tabernacle
and the Temple. The word used for temple and tabernacle is the word MIKDASH, very similar to the name of God
and has the meaning 'sanctuary'. It was a place set apart for the worship of Jehovah .

         6. Sanctify is also used in reference to people. Individuals were set apart from birth or even before birth.
             a. Jeremiah was sanctified to Jehovah's service as a prophet to the nation ( Jer. 1:5 )
             b. The first born of Israel were set apart ( Ex. 13:2 )
             c. On the head of the high priest was a sign of his being set apart to  Jehovah: Holy unto the Lord  'Kodesh  YHWY'
                  Ex. 28:36

         7. The point in all of these uses is the contact with God.

    B. Historical Significance
        1. It's appearance in the Book Of Leviticus is most appropriate. The order in which it appears in the revelation of the
names of God, and in the peoples experience when it is revealed is also significant.

QUESTION: Anyone remember the meaning of the names we have previously studies and their place in Salvation History?

  -Elohim: Strong Creator
  -Jehovah: The God of relationship
-El Elyon: The Most High God
-Adonai: Master / Husband / Lord 'He is responsible for our needs'
-El Shaddai: All mighty God 'One sensitive enough to care and strong enough to provide'
-El Olam: Everlasting God 'I will be faithful to you forever but I will only reveal myself to you in ways you can handle.
-Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord who provides ' I will provide myself a lamb for the sacrifice'
-Jehovah-Rophe: The Lord who heals thee 'I will make a way to heal your disease of sin thru the cross of Calvary'
-Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord is my banner 'I will unite my people and make them victorious in the battle against the flesh'
-Jehovah-M'Kaddesh: The Lord who sanctifies thee 'I will set you apart and make you holy'

         2. Genesis, the book of beginnings reveals the beginning of sin and  Jehovah's beginning relationship and process of
restoration of man to a right relationship with Himself.

         3. Exodus,  the book of redemption,  shows Jehovah in the redemption of His people from the bondage of Egypt, which
is a type of our   redemption  from sin. Exodus also revealed God as Jehovah Rophe, God who heals life's wounds
and sweetens it's bitter experiences. Exodus  further reveals God as  Jehovah Nissi, God is my banner, at Rephidim,
where  Israel battled with Amalek and won because  Israel depended on God as their  banner and strength.

        4. Leviticus is the book of life, or walk and worship of a people already  redeemed. Therefore sanctification is it's most
appropriate theme. It tells people already redeemed how to walk  worthy of their calling as children of God.
( Eph. 4:1 ) and the spiritual worship God demands of them.
