6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. —Galatians 4:6-7

Every day, the world challenges our identity as believers by telling us who we are—or ought to be—by shaping our desires, defining what is important, outlining the values we should have, and guiding how we should spend our time and resources. What the world is telling you may not be true.

A rancher hunting in West Texas found an eagle’s nest and took an egg, placing it under a hen. When it hatched, the eaglet was cared for alongside chicks, living in the barnyard, eating and sleeping with the chickens. One day, a mountain eagle swooped down, prompting the mother hen to squawk loudly to protect her chicks. As the eagle swooped low and let out a harsh scream, only eagles do. The chicks heeded their mother’s warning, but the eaglet responded, taking flight and following the eagle to the mountain heights.

What does Scripture tell us about who we are as children of God? We are the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8); the flock of His people (Zechariah 9:16); a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord and a royal diadem in the hand of our God (Isaiah 62:3); the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:17). We are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). We are kings and priests of our God (Revelation 5:10). We were created to bear His likeness (Genesis 1:27). Most important, we are God’s children (1 John 3:1). We belong to Him and our hearts cry “Abba, Father!” when He calls to us.

So let me encourage you today to listen for His voice! Understand who you are and ask Him what your purpose is for Him. He is the One who made you!
