“…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:2
Though I’ve never run a marathon myself, I’ve heard it’s common to feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities that come with it. The Greek word for “looking” literally means to “look away from everything else” and focus on a single point. To succeed in a race, you need to be mindful and intentionally focus on avoiding distractions, setbacks, and even your own strengths, while staying committed to your goal.
Reflect on these three challenges Jesus faced, which we'll also experience as we journey through the marathon of life:
- He is Our Source and Goal: Jesus is both the "founder'—the one who initiated our faith—and the "perfecter'—the one who will bring it to completion. Remember, your spiritual journey isn't just about your willpower; it's firmly grounded in His finished work, which assures your growth and completion.
- He is Our Present and Future Joy:- Jesus did not find joy in the pain of the cross itself, but in what it represented—our redemption and His reunion with the Father. When we encounter "thorns," we can persevere by focusing on the "roses" of God’s everlasting promises.
- He Is Our Victory: Jesus is now seated at God's right hand, a position that shows His work is complete. He's not pacing around worried; He has already secured victory. Now, He lovingly intercedes for us from a place of complete authority.
What "weight" might be making you look away from Jesus? Whether it's a "root of bitterness" or the "fleeting pleasures of sin,' consider setting it aside today. Remember, your life tends to follow where you focus; so, keep your eyes fixed on the One who never fails.
My heartfelt prayer for all of us: Heavenly Father, please help us shift our focus away from the things that distract us, including our own shortcomings. Strengthen our faith and gently remind us of the joy that awaits us. Thank You for Jesus, the one who begins and completes our story. Amen.
Living in Victory,
Gene
