“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” —Hebrews 4:16
In ancient times, approaching a king’s throne without an invitation could mean a death sentence. Even for the high priests of Israel, entering into God’s presence was a rare and solemn occasion, likely filled with fear, and was limited to just once a year. But thanks to Jesus, our Great High Priest who understands our weaknesses, the “KEEP OUT” sign has been taken down from the door.
The writer of Hebrews talks about ‘confidence’ or boldness, but it’s not about arrogant pride. Instead, it’s like the joyful freedom of a child rushing into the loving arms of their Father. You don’t need to “clean yourself up” or use perfect religious words before speaking to God. Remember, the throne you’re approaching isn’t one of judgment, but one of grace, welcoming you with open arms.
At God’s throne, He offers two very specific gifts:
Mercy: Forgiveness is about letting go of our past mistakes and sins. Mercy is when God chooses not to give us what we might deserve, showing His compassion and love.
Grace: Think of grace as God's gentle gift during tough times. It's His way of giving us exactly what we need, right when we need it most—a perfectly timed help that we can't earn on our own.
So, what is your “time of need” today? Could it be a tough conversation, a tempting thought, or a heavy weight of guilt? Remember, there’s no need to hide in shame. The door is open wide, inviting you in. Come close to Him now, and rest in the knowledge that you are truly welcomed and listened to.
Father, thank you for reminding me that I don’t have to face life’s battles alone. I come before Your throne of grace today, surrendering my pride and fears. Please bless me with the mercy I need for my sins and mistakes, and fill me with the grace to keep moving forward. I’m grateful that You always provide the help I need at just the right time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Simply trusting every day,
Gene
