There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.—1 John 4:18

I’ve heard it said that fear is a persistent squatter. It constantly whispers about our past mistakes and sins, our current inadequacies, and the punishment we certainly deserve. Whether we continue to dread God’s judgment or have paralyzing anxiety about daily living, fear thrives in the shadows of uncertainty.

Yet John offers the perfect divine eviction notice: “Perfect Love.”

In our verse, the word “perfect” doesn’t mean you have to love God without making mistakes. Instead, it’s all about God’s complete, unconditional love for you, the believer. This love is considered “perfected” when it goes beyond mere knowledge and truly becomes part of how we live—showing up in our hearts and actions. When I was in missions, one of the main mottos I kept hearing was to move your ministry from Head, Heart, to Hands, emphasizing a holistic approach. We gain the Head knowledge, which needs to move the 18 inches to the Heart, thus producing the Hands of living out truth.

God’s love doesn't just kindly ask fear to go away—it actively "casts it out," literally throwing it out of your life. As we soak in the truth of how deeply we are loved, our confidence naturally blossoms. We won’t feel the need to serve God out of a distant, "servile" fear of being caught or judged, but rather out of a warm, "filial" love—the gentle, secure affection of a child for a caring Father.

Are you still holding onto a fear—judgment, failure, or the future? How would your day change if you truly believed God’s perfect love has already taken care of the punishment you're afraid of?

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love. Help me rest in the truth that, because of Jesus, I have nothing to fear. Remove dread from my heart and replace it with quiet confidence as Your beloved child. Amen.

Lovingly submitted,
