We read in Romans 1:19-20—19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

We could explore multiple directions with these verses, but today I'm choosing a different direction for us. At times, perhaps even now, many of us feel it's impossible to hear God amidst the chaos of war, natural disasters, and the illnesses affecting our loved ones. We cry out for help, yet it feels as if God is distant, not responding to our pleas for peace. Have you felt this way? I certainly have!

Yet, even in those moments of anguish and upheaval, the evidence of God is obvious to those who will diligently seek Him. God’s fingerprints are all over creation, though mankind tries every theory to disprove a Creator. I shared recently with the congregation I am fortunate to pastor these comments:

To be an atheist, I would have to believe the following:

  1. Nothing produced everything
  2. Non-life produced life
  3. Randomness produced Precision
  4. Chaos produced Order

Then I ended by stating that I do not have that much faith!

The apostle Paul is the author of this letter to the church in Rome. I suggest that through the words he penned in the preceding verses, he encourages us to continue seeking the Lord. This is reminiscent of his encounter in Acts 17, where he speaks before the Areopagus in Athens, particularly in verses 27 and 28:

27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for “ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

I challenge you today, even though it's raining here in NJ, to read Romans 1:19-20 outside. After that, pray those verses back to God: 19 For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God has revealed it to them. 20 For his invisible qualities, specifically his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world through what has been made. Thus, they are without excuse.

Blessings on your faith journey,

Gene
