A local newspaper spoke with a farmer regarding the impact of recent weather conditions on his crops. Thanks to ample rainfall, his soybean and corn fields flourished and appeared vibrant. “My crops are particularly susceptible right now," he said. This statement surprised the reporter, who originally intended to center the article on the beneficial harvest and the economic boost it would provide for the small town. The farmer elaborated, “Even a brief drought could severely harm the crops."

“Why?” the reporter inquired.

The farmer explained that although the frequent rains are beneficial, during these wet periods, the plants don’t need to extend their roots deep for water. As a result, the roots stay near the surface, which leaves the plants unprepared for dry spells. Furthermore, his crops were at risk from strong winds due to the shallow root structure; a powerful gust could destroy them in just a few minutes.

I share this story as a reminder for us, followers of Jesus. While some believers experience abundant blessings from worship services, fellowship, and insightful Biblical teaching, what occurs when stress enters their lives? Many may lose faith, abandon God, or feel that God has been unfaithful. Why does this happen? I would argue that, similar to a farmer's crops, their roots haven't grown deep enough in the soil.

Their spiritual lives are imbalanced, emphasizing reliance on others rather than personal devotion through prayer and the study of God’s Word. This reliance makes them particularly susceptible to the harsh winds of adversity and the intense heat of stress. Only a deep-rooted connection with the Lord can sustain us during challenging times.

My challenge for you today is to deepen your spiritual roots every day. Spend time with Jesus, engage with His Word, and pray!

6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

                                    ~ Colossians 2:6-7 ESV

Wishing you blessings on your faith journey, and may your roots grow deep,

Gene
