"And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” — Luke 24:25-26
In context with our passage, two disciples are walking to Emmaus, their hearts filled with sadness. They had hoped Jesus would be a political savior, but His crucifixion seemed to crush those hopes forever. They were so caught up in their disappointment that they didn’t realize the very Person walking right next to them.
Have you ever considered that Jesus doesn't just offer a hug; He offers the Truth. He calls them "slow of heart" because they only believed the "victory" parts of the scriptures while ignoring the "suffering" parts. He gently reminds them that the path to glory must include the cross. It isn't a mistake or a setback; it was part of the plan from the beginning. So what can we learn from our passage?
First, don’t shy away from the tough chapters: Just like the disciples, we sometimes wish for God’s blessings without going through His refining fire. It’s normal to feel "foolish" or lost when life gets difficult, but Jesus gently reminds us that often, suffering is the very path leading us to glory.
Secondly, instead of only listening to your feelings, turn to the Word: When the disciples felt dejected, Jesus gently reminded them of the Scriptures. Your emotions might make you feel like God has stepped away, but the Word assures you that He is always working towards something greater.
Oh, dear child of God, remember that He is always with you during your wait. Even when you don’t immediately see Him, Jesus is there by your side, guiding you through those "Emmaus road" moments of uncertainty and confusion.
Heavenly Father, please forgive me for sometimes feeling "slow of heart" when things don't turn out the way I hope. I ask for Your help to trust that, even during my hardest trials, You are always working for Your glory. Please open my eyes to see Jesus in every page of Your Word and in every step of my journey. Amen.
That I will bring Him glory in the wait,
Gene
