In Deuteronomy 1, we find the account of God commanding Moses to lead Israel away from Horeb. Subsequently, in verses nine through eighteen, leaders are appointed. Today, let’s focus on verse 13, which states: "Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’
Leadership is crucial, and choosing effective leaders can significantly impact an organization. On my way home from the gym today, I heard a news report from the LA Times about impending layoffs. Among various reasons cited, one was the Times' inadequate leadership.
Leadership applies not only in workplaces but also in homes, churches, and beyond. I once read that “wise leadership is not discovered through a popularity contest,” yet this is a common occurrence in politics and religious institutions.
So, where can we discover wise leaders? I propose that the most effective approach is to look among those who already display wise leadership qualities. These individuals appear to be open and genuine, demonstrating these traits without any ulterior motives or personal biases. In other words, those who are already leading effectively.
At my son's graduation from special forces training, a distinguished speaker encouraged the class to embrace leadership. After each challenge presented, the speaker would assert, 'If no one is leading, you lead!' And believe me, they certainly did!
We need leaders in the church who lead while others prefer to talk. However, I want to clarify that I am not advocating for dictatorship; there are already too many leaders acting as dictators. When I refer to finding leaders, I mean those who guide others towards God. In my humble opinion, this reflects their understanding that true wisdom is derived from Him, reminding both themselves and others of the importance of humbling ourselves under the mighty hand of God, who will exalt us in His own timing. This, of course, does not bring us glory, but rather honors the One who truly deserves it—God Himself.
When seeking a leader, choose those who turn to Him; if you are a leader, remain humble!
Blessings,
Gene
