"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." --Philippians 4:13
This might be one of the most, if not the most, misquoted verses in Scripture. When the Apostle Paul shared these words, he wasn’t on a football field or basketball court, nor was he delivering a sermon from behind a podium; instead, he was chained in a Roman prison, reminding us of the powerful message behind his words.
He had just received a financial gift from the Philippian church, and his response in verses 11–12 is famously "thankless" by worldly standards. He tells them he is grateful for their concern, but insists that he was actually fine without the money. He explains that he has learned the “secret” of being content in every situation, whether he was hungry or well-fed, living in abundance or being in need.
“All Things” isn’t just “Anything”: Paul isn’t suggesting a free pass to win a basketball game or to get a promotion you’ve been hoping for. In “CONTEXT,” “all things” refers to the difficult extremes he previously discussed—such as suffering, poverty, and even the allure of sudden wealth.
While our salvation is entirely a result of Christ’s work, Paul “learned” to be content, reminding us that sanctification involves working together. When we choose to depend on Him, Jesus graciously provides the power we need to stay faithful and steadfast.
For believers, this verse is a comforting promise that, because we are forever in Christ, we can draw on a strength that isn’t dependent on our bank accounts, 401Ks, or comfort. It reminds us that we're never alone and always cared for, regardless of material circumstances.
You don’t need a “better life” to enjoy a closer relationship with God. Whether you're going through a season of “abundance” or “hardship,” remember that you are already fully accepted and loved in the Beloved.
Today, as you go through your day, remember that you have the strength to face your current challenges and celebrate your successes while staying connected to God. Why?—because the same Christ who saved you by His grace is now empowering you for the journey ahead.
Seeking to Trust the Journey,
