“—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” —James 4:14
It’s easy to picture a chilly morning this time of year, especially after walking the dog and noticing that little puff of air from my breath. For a brief moment, it's clear and vivid, then it vanishes just as fast into nothingness. In James's writing, this imagery of mist or vapor beautifully symbolizes the delicate and fleeting nature of our earthly lives.
We frequently dream about "next year” or “someday” as if we’re the ones holding the pen to our own calendars. Please don’t get me wrong—making plans isn’t a bad thing. But if we’re honest, sometimes we treat our lives like solid stone monuments, even though God gently reminds us they are more like a morning fog that quickly vanishes. This isn’t meant to cause worry, but to encourage humility and a sense of urgency. When we recognize that our time is a precious gift that will eventually fade away, we’re inspired to focus on what truly matters rather than wasting it on things that don’t last.
So, here is my challenge:
—Surrender Your “Someday”: If there is a “right thing” you have been postponing—a word of forgiveness, an act of service, or a step of faith—DO IT TODAY!
—Shift Your Perspective: Instead of focusing on earthly gains that fade, invest your “mist” of a life into eternal treasures: loving God and serving others.
—Practice Dependence: Before you make your plans, adopt the heart of James 4:15 by saying, “If the Lord wills, we ( I ) will live and do this or that.”
Our Loving Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of this breath You’ve given us. Please forgive me for any arrogance in thinking I have endless time. Help me to appreciate each day, so I can grow in wisdom. Use my life—no matter how short it is—to shine Your glory before I leave this world. Amen.
Just a vapor,
Gene
