The apostle Paul gives the Believers at the church in Ephesus this challenge: “rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,” (Ephesians 6:7)
This verse provides a revolutionary view on work, addressing bondservants and masters in a culture where servants were treated as mere tools. Paul urges believers to change their motivation, emphasizing that whatever they do should be done as service to the Lord, not for human approval or reward.
Paul gently reminds us that while our earthly bosses come and go, the Lord is our true and eternal supervisor. Focusing on the bigger picture makes a difference. Though our human supervisors are imperfect and temporary, our true Master in heaven is always watching. Remembering we serve God first shifts our view of difficult bosses and feeling unappreciated to one of trust and purpose. We seek His praise instead of human approval, knowing He notices our efforts even when unrecognized. This brings joy and purpose, transforming our work into love and obedience to Him.
Verse eight reminds us that whatever good we do, we will receive from the Lord, whether slave or free. Our faithful service isn't unnoticed—God will reward us, even if earthly employers don’t. This promise assures that our work in the Lord is never in vain, giving us hope and strength to persevere with integrity and diligence.
Ask yourself, how would my approach to my job, household chores, or volunteer work change if I consistently saw myself as serving Jesus directly? (Because we are!)
Lord, help me live each day knowing my work is for You. Teach me to serve with good will and integrity, free from needing approval. Let my attitude and actions reflect Your character and bring You glory in every task. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Working for Him,
Gene
