“They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them.”
— Nehemiah 9:17
It’s understandable to wonder how the Israelites could forget so quickly. After experiencing miracles like the plagues, the parted seas, and manna from heaven, they still struggled with rebellion, even considering returning to the slavery from which God had graciously freed them.
But honestly, our own "stiff necks" can look quite similar. It's easy to forget God’s faithfulness when a new trial comes along, or to fall back into old habits and "Egyptian" bondages because the desert of faith sometimes feels just too tough to navigate.
The miracle of this verse is that God is patient and ready to forgive. He isn’t reluctant; He waits for us, pursuing us with unending love. No matter how far you've wandered, God seeks reasons to stay, not leave.
Lord, I am truly grateful that You do not treat me as my sins deserve. Please forgive me for those times I’ve been stubborn or overlooked the incredible things You’ve done in my life. Thank You for Your forgiving and slow-to-anger nature. Help me find peace in Your unwavering love today and walk confidently in the freedom You’ve given. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Walking in Grace,
Gene
